Indian astrology, also known as ‘Vedic’ or ‘Hindu’ astrology, is the traditional system of astral light patterns being used to determine our destiny. Having originated in ancient India in the 3rd century, Indian astrology has become an influential practice in Hindu cultures – with some Indian universities now offering it as an advanced degree.
What is it?
Often referred to as ‘Jyotish’ – the science of light –Indian Astrology adopts the core principle that all things are linked.
As it is believed a person’s destiny is determined by their cosmic design, the existence of the soul and body reflects the greater whole into which they were born. In other words, the theory of karma is very much prevalent.
As a result, the main premise of Indian Astrology is the ‘chart’. Each person has their own individual chart, which is a map of the planets in the signs of the zodiac.
These elements are founded on a precise moment, for instance, the moment you were born and the place you were born. In this case, it would be referred to as your ‘birth chart’ or ‘natal chart’.
By using the 7 physical planets; Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, plus the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu, the unfolding cycles of our lives are interpreted through the interaction between these 9 bodies.
The positions of the planets represent your fortune, resulting in the formation of your ‘dashas’– a predictive timeline of destiny.
The Indian astrologer will look at these planets, signs and placements in your chart and will uncover your personality, life events and possibilities, both good and bad. The ‘dashas’ are then used to determine a timescale of events, helping to provide a predictive timeline.
How does it differ from Western Astrology?
The main difference between Indian astrology and Western astrology is that ‘Jyotish’ interprets the zodiac as being fixed as opposed to moving.
This is because of the gradual tilting of the earth on its axis. Currently, the movable zodiac is out of alignment with the fixed zodiac by about one whole sign. Due to this, the ‘sun sign’ you are associated with in Western Astrology may be different from the sign you belong to in Indian Astrology.
In addition, Indian ‘dashas’ offer a more accurate prediction of astrology, due to the ‘planetary ruling periods’ which are unique to Indian Astrology.
These give astrologers a powerful, precise tool to predict life events and timeliness with enhanced accuracy. Consequently, Indian astrologers tend to be more in-depth than western astrologers, focusing more upon details of life events rather than just your general overall self.
